Innovative Learning Environments

Multi-modal and rich in technology, these innovative learning environments (ILEs) offer flexible layouts to accommodate both participation and independent learning. 

These ILEs reflect our beliefs about learning and leading. Sacred Heart’s Catholic Character and rich HERstory is integrated throughout these contemporary spaces. The names of these areas have been carefully chosen to instil a deeper connection to these wonderful learning spaces.

Te Huia

Huia e huia, tangata kotahi! / Huia, your destiny is to bring everyone together!

Te Huia is a destination space, featuring the impressive Pentecost window. It is large, open, light and quiet with limited furniture giving it a reflective, contemplative feel. 

Maker Space

Adjacent to Te Huia, this area is designed for creativity, use of technology, and collaboration. Resources available include a 3D printer, laser cutter, a vaquform machine, and Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality (AR/VR) goggles.

Iti Kahurangi

Whāia te iti kahurangi ki te tūohu koe me he maunga teitei / Pursue that which is precious and do not be deterred by anything less than a lofty mountain

Iti Kahurangi is a large collaborative learning space with breakout areas enabling flexible and interchangeable co-teaching and small and large group activities.

Whakanui

Ka whakanui tōku wairua i te Ariki / My Soul Glorifies the Lord

Whakanui, is another large collaborative learning space with breakout areas enabling flexible and interchangeable co-teaching and small and large group activities. 

Te Koronga

An ardent desire towards higher learning.

Located downstairs, Te Koronga is an explorative space primarily used for the teaching of Sciences. It features multiple break-out settings, a variety of furniture options and independent study nooks for learning flexibility. A key feature is the state-of-the-art laboratory spaces.

There are three laboratories:

  1. Dry Lab: used for activities that do not require a Science lab but may be messy!
  2. Small Lab: used for small-scale investigations where students can do a range of activities in one
    space. Also used for activities where a dark space is needed.
  3. Large Lab: large class experiments, internals, chemical experiments and visiting speakers.
